It would allow us to experience more of the excellent combat, and at the same time really improve the excitement of exploration. (Unless there are some secret bosses I missed)Ī more "Dark Souls" approach to bosses would have been great for this game, as the amount in the game currently just didn't feel like enough to me. For example, if the two core pillars of the game are combat and exploration, a no-brainer design decision would be to include more than 5 bosses (I guess you could argue 7 bosses) in the entire game, and to make some of them optional and what not. I really ended up liking it overall, but I can't help but feel like it missed some golden opportunities. I think a more open layout to the levels would have helped a lot, rather than having them be one big linear string. Which is kind of a staple of exploration based games. I found that when going back to explore I couldn't quite remember where anything was, all the levels kind of blended together for me, which made it hard to do something like "Oh I need to go check out that door from before". I think the level design leaves a little to be desired when compared to similar action adventure games, but the combat is a lot better than something like Zelda. I just beat it yesterday, and I have to say it really grew on me as I played. GurpeguiĪ beautiful and hard experience that may have a narrative that's just ok. IGN Spain - 8.5/10 Review Author: Carlos G. It's a rare and beautiful gem that only certain people will find the full, true value in. It can also be really, really tedious to play through, as it leans heavily on classical, trial-and-error mechanics. It's polished to a mirror shine, it's tuned to mechanical harmony, it's gorgeous for the eyes and ears alike, but has a plot that doesn't even try (or even seemingly care) to make sense. Hyper Light Drifter is a great game, but it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. Where it falls flat is its miserable starting area, boring exploration and inconsequential - 9/10 Review Author: Grant Patterson Hyper Light Drifter shows a lot of potential thanks to its great combat and solid world building. The combat and movement often left me slack-jawed and giddy, a perfect homage to the '90s RPGs that obviously inspired Heart Machine, while still feeling completely fresh and constantly surprising.Īrcade Sushi - 7/10 Review Author: Danny Saya Mood and atmosphere can carry me a long way, and I adored every second I spent in Hyper Light Drifter's world. It apparently doesn’t want me to play it any more.ĭestructoid - 9/10 Review Author: Nic Rowen Here goes my time with Hyper Light Drifter, a completely gorgeous game I was utterly loving. Rock, Paper, Shotgun - No Score Review Author: John Walker Stylish, beautiful, and uncompromising, Hyper Light Drifter is as rewarding as it is frustrating. PC Gamer - 78/100 Review Author: Andy Kelly It leaves the combat to speak for the story and trusts its murderer's row of cool ideas to, well, murder players. Slant Magazine - 4/5 Review Author: Aaron Riccio Hyper Light Drifter stands out as a game that not only manages to combine exciting combat, gorgeous visuals and an inherent drive towards exploration, but its emotionally open-ended narrative and thematic prowess make this a title that feels like a true labor of love. Hardcore Gamer - 4.5/5 Review Author: Matt Whittaker We Got This Covered - 5/5 Review Author: Josh HollowayĮvery element of Hyper Light Drifter blends together to form a near perfect action-adventure game that's worthy to stand with the impeccable games it borrows from.
